The Broken Monoliths

Two tutorial stones have been broken since before early access. What did they say, and are there hidden control inputs?

Unsolved

What We Know

Among the tutorial monoliths in the entrance cave, the left reads RUBEDO (the final stage of the alchemical magnum opus) and the right reads ETERNAL LIFE.

Two other stones, next to the control-input stones, have been broken since before early access (already broken in the 2017 build).

The launch giveaway GIF wrote, in eye-glyphs, 'Tears in the eye gazing the sky and receive thy reward' plus encoded Steam keys, on the kick/inventory control stones.

Confirmed

Left = RUBEDO, right = ETERNAL LIFE

Alchemical/hermetic glyphs framing the game's reincarnation-through-runs theme.

Theories (Ranked)

Promising

The tablets showed an ordinary (obscure) mechanic

The community's practical read: the smashed control tablets likely depicted a real but non-obvious mechanic - top guesses are the kick-parry (kick a melee attacker at the right moment to reflect the hit) or eating (press down) and drinking potions (right-click). Some argue there is no hidden control at all, only movement tech. Source: u/Givened, u/lidaster, u/Dev_Oleksii

Speculative

Hidden control inputs

Their position beside the control stones hints at secret inputs (a key sequence or a word to type). Precedent: Environmental Station Alpha (same dev, Arvi) requires typed input at certain spots.

Speculative

Environmental storytelling

The broken stones may simply be lore/atmosphere, with the original content lost.
