The Alchemy Symbol

A dollar-sign-in-a-capsule buried above the High Alchemist's Arena. Attributed to Petri, like the eyes.

Unsolved

What We Know

Buried beneath the snow above the High Alchemist's Arena. Community-named the 'alchemy symbol' or 'dollar symbol'.

It predates the arena, boss, and tech egg: it existed in early access when the biome was the old 'twisty passages', was briefly removed, then re-added.

Every developer denies knowledge of it except Petri, so it is attributed to him (as are the eyes).

Confirmed

Predates the arena/boss/tech-egg

Present in the old 'twisty passages' biome, removed for a couple updates, then re-added long before the arena existed.

Reads as $ over Aqua Vitae; whole shape a down arrow

A dollar sign inside a capsule with what may be the alchemic symbol for Aqua Vitae underneath; the whole glyph also resembles a down arrow. 📷 Full photo

Debunked

Material interactions in the basins

Filling the basins with whiskey, Midas, precursor, gold nuggets, gold powder, helium, and lively concoction produced no reaction. No material-interaction triggers exist here (unlike orb rooms).

The lower glyph is the alchemical Essence of Earth

The inverted triangle with a horizontal line is the alchemical sign for Earth; players read the '$' as the gold biome that sits above/near it. The Essence of Water (also an inverted triangle) likewise sits near a gold biome.

Promising

A signpost: 'go down for gold'

The most common community reading: the '$' plus down-arrow simply flags the gold biome / Essence of Earth below it, a directional label rather than an interactive puzzle. Source: u/RoseAndLorelei, u/demonly48

Speculative

Material cue (Aqua Vitae -> whiskey)

The Aqua Vitae symbol may call for whiskey, the strongest in-game spirit (closest to ethanol). Tests so far have failed, but the material set may be incomplete.

Speculative

Rod of Asclepius origin

The '$' may derive from the alchemic S-over-T (the brazen serpent / Rod of Asclepius).
