Hills 2 & the Microbiomes

Tiny titled biomes nobody can explain, including an empty 'Hills 2' whose data holds eye-shaped caves that never generate.

Unsolved

What We Know

Several 'microbiomes' get official title cards: two gold biomes (money, but oddly titled), and a lone water biome inside the cursed rock around the tower that predates the tower entirely.

The 'Hills 2' biome sits in empty space on the eastern side, with no visible hills.

The data has a `caves` folder with six eye-shaped cave structures; the code to generate them exists in, and only in, the `hills` and `hills2` biomes, yet they never seem to appear.

Confirmed

Titled gold and water microbiomes

Two gold biomes and a lone water chunk (present before the tower) each get real biome title cards.

Hills 2 has no hills

The Hills 2 biome occupies empty eastern space with no visible hills in a normal world; its terrain only actually renders at NG+14, when it replaces every surface biome.

Six eye-shaped caves that never generate

A `caves` folder holds six eye-shaped structures; generation code exists only in hills/hills2 but they don't appear to spawn.

NG+14 turns the whole surface into Hills 2

At New Game +14, every surface biome is replaced by Hills 2, finally revealing its intended terrain: dense, forest-like higher-frequency hills. Even with Hills 2 blanketing the surface, the six eye-caves still do not generate.

Theories (Ranked)

Promising

A dormant or bugged feature

The eye-caves may be unfinished/bugged content that never triggers.

Speculative

Reachable via an undiscovered trigger

They may generate only after a convoluted condition, possibly linked to the 34-orb persisted-memory state.
